Weekly Drop-in Classes
HBCU Dance: Stands & Field
|
This course will focus on the fundamentals and movements similarly performed by dance lines associated with marching bands of historically black colleges, including stand choreography, [Jazz] field choreography, the concept of bucking, hip-hop combination, parades, marches and stunts. Participants will also be introduced to Historically Black Colleges & Universities and participate in myth busting workshops associated with attending HBCUs.

Intro to Dance Technique
|
Class Description: The introductory Ballet and Creative Movement fused course will equip young dancers with the necessary fundamentals in basic Ballet and Jazz techniques, while helping them increase their overall body awareness and awareness of rhythm. Course goals include the ability to demonstrate same side and cross-body movements, body patterning movements, and body shapes, and the ability to move safely in general space and start and stop on cue during activities, group formations, and creative explorations while maintaining personal space.

Intro to Majorette
|
Class Description: This course introduces young dancers to the majorette style of dance, including the concept of bucking, hip-hop combination, parades, marches and stunts.

Beginner Dance Technique
|
Class Description: This course offers an exploration into technical dance genres including Jazz, Ballet (including barre), Modern, and Contemporary. Course goals include the ability to recall and execute a series of dance phrases using fundamental dance skills and the ability to . demonstrate safe body-use practices during technical exercises and movement combinations.

Majorette Hip-Hop
|
Class Description: This high-energy, synchronized, rhythmic dance class will draw from Ballet, Jazz, Modern dance, Hip-Hop and gymnastics. Within this course, participants will learn movements similarly performed by dance lines associated with marching bands of historically black colleges, including the concept of bucking, hip-hop combination, parades, marches and stunts.

Dance Technique Level I
|
Class Description: This course offers a deep exploration into technical dance genres including Jazz, Ballet (including barre), Modern, and Contemporary appropriate for teens and adults. Class goals include the ability to embody technical dance skills (for example, functional alignment, coordination, balance, core support, clarity of movement, weight shifts, flexibility/range of motion) to retain and execute dance combinations.

Dance Technique Level II
|
Class Description: This course offers a more advanced exploration into technical dance genres including Jazz, Ballet (including barre), Modern, and Contemporary appropriate for teens and adults. Course goals include the ability to apply body-mind principles to technical dance skills in complex choreography and combinations when performing solo, partnering, or dancing in ensemble works in a variety of dance genres and styles. Dancers will also be able to apply technical dance skills for achieving fluency of movement.

Adults Only: Hip-Hop
|
Class Description: Intermediate Hip-Hop dance classes performed to Hip-Hop, Rap, and R&B music.

Adults Only: Majorette Stands
|
Class Description: Beginner/intermediate 8-count and 16-count choreography inspired by HBCU dance lines that will be performed to Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, and band music selections.

Adults Only: Heels
|
Class Description: Beginner/intermediate sensual dance choreography that will be performed to Hip-Hop, Rap, and [mostly] R&B music.

(DCO) is a dance company dedicated to providing a low-barrier safe space, for African American girls and women, to bond socially, release emotionally, and express creatively through various styles of dance. Classes Included: Weekly Show Rehearsals (new / level I dancers meet Mondays, 6p-7:30p; veterans / level II dancers meet Mondays 7:30p-9p), Dance Technique (new / level I dancers meet Thursdays 6p-7:30p; veterans / level II dancers meet Thursdays 7:30p - 9p), and the choice of HBCU Dance Class or all Adults Only Classes (must be 18+ for adults only selection).
